This is a small sanctuary connected by motorable road. Renuka lake and the temples attract a large number of people from hills and plains. Forests and the catchment of the lake add to its beauty and attraction. Lion Safari and open Nature Parks with freely moving animals like Chittal, Sambhar, Kakkar, etc. are a big attraction. Tourist Bunglow and Cafeteria provide the comforts needed in a calm and quite place. Visitors come all round the year.

The area is comprised of the sacred Renuka Lake, Renuka Reserve Forest, an aviary, the Lion Safari and Renukaji Mini Zoo, which is the oldest Zoo in the state. Renuka wildlife sanctuary, despite its small size, has a lot to offer the wildlife enthusiasts.

       History : The Renuka Sanctuary was initially stabled on 22nd July 1964 and was later re-notified again on 25th March 1987. There is a historical legend that abounds the sanctuary. It is believed that Renukaji and her son Lord Parshuram considered as the human avatars of Goddess Durga and Lord Vishnu resided in the sanctuary several centuries ago. Sue to certain conditions, Lord Parshuram was directed by his father to behead his mother.

       Geography :The Renuka Sanctuary spans over an area of 400 hectares. The sanctuary spreads around the Renuka Lake and consists of grass and woodland. Climate and Visiting Season: The sanctuary can be visited at any time all around the year. However the spring and fall seasons are the best to visit the sanctuary.

       Flora at Renuka Sanctuary:The sanctuary features lush vegetation including Anogeissus, Terminalia, Shisham,Lucinea, Khair, Cordia, Carrie and several varieties of climbers.

       Fauna At Renuka Sanctuary :The fauna of the area also includes threatened khaleej pheasant, red junglefowl, drongos, blue jay, black partridge, bulbul, coots, hill crow, scarlet minivet, green pigeons as well as the geese along with other aquatic bird species.

       Trekking :Taking a lion safari in the area is one of the best activities that people can enjoy in the Renuka Sanctuary. There are a few hiking trails around the park that are quite interesting to walk around. Visitors can also enjoy trekking from Nahan to the sanctuary.

How To Get There

The sanctuary is located about 40Km from Nahan and is easily accessible. The closest point to the sanctuary is Dadahu.

Air: The Jabarhatt Airport is the closest airport to the nature reserve.

Rail : The nearest railway station is in Shimla, which is connected to Kalka by a narrow-gauge line.

Road : The nature reserve is well-connected by road and there is a bus every hour that leaves from Nahan to Dadahu. Nahan is connected to different cities and towns of Himachal Pradesh.

Where To Stay

Accommodation facilities are available close to the Renuka Lake from where tourists can enjoy beautiful views. There are rest houses available at Dadahu from where visitors can get easy transportation or trek to the park. Nahan also offers good luxury and budget hotels.

Best Time To Visit

Summer :

The summer time is good to visit the park. The weather is pleasurable and excellent to take the safari and explore the sanctuary.

Monsoon :

Monsoon months are not suitable for visiting the park. The area receives heavy rainfall that can hamper the sightseeing.

Winter :

Winters are also good and pleasant in the area. It is one of the best times to visit the sanctuary.
